As flute players we are 'Artists of the Breath.' Our musical message is carried on our air, yet often we work against ourselves by pushing, pulling or pinching the airstream through misuse of the body. The result is a dimming of our musical message.
In the AoB technique classes and in the small break-out masterclasses, Lorna and Gaby work as a team, using the framework of Alexander Technique to come back to first principles and recognize 'the body as the instrument.'
Through in depth observation, students learn to recognize where they are working against themselves physically and learn how to make empowered choices based in graceful, coordinated movement that allows for freedom of the breath and by extension greater freedom of expression and effortless effort.
The AoB Series @ The Flute Retreat
During the retreat week we will go more in depth into the principles through 6 group technique classes, and 2 break out Masterclasses with both Lorna & Gaby. These include 4 Performers, 3-4 Participants and 1 Auditor. The break out classes are smaller and more intimate which allows for a more in depth discovery of full resonant sound and artistic potential.
Lorna & Gaby are thrilled to introduce Jean McClelland's Breath & Voice workshop to flutists! Click here for more from Jean.
3 live zoom preparatory classes with Lorna & Gaby before the retreat week to familiarize yourself with the Flute Fundamentals through an Alexander Technique lens. Classes will cover Introduction to Alexander Technique, choosing how we work with ourselves, breathing, holding the instrument in a supported way, articulation, finger dexterity, tone, flexibility.
These sessions create an essential foundation and common language, upon which we build during the retreat.
