Hi Gwen, can you tell me a little bit about this event?
The October 18th concert “ISC Virtuosi” is the season opener for the Instrumental Society of Calgary. The time is 3pm as always, but ISC has changed locations to St. Stephens Anglican Church on 14th St SW. We’ve had a few rehearsals there already and the acoustics and aesthetics are uplifting.
My friends and colleagues from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra are having a wonderful time rehearsing Brahms Serenade No 1 and No 2 - I am so looking forward to performing my all time favourite work of Brahms (Serenade No 2).
I saw that there was an additional component to this event as well - what is that about?
In early September a friend let me know about a CBC interview with Abe Janzen, Executive Director of Mennonite Central Committee Alberta on the Syrian Refugee Crisis. click here to listen
I had a listen on line and an idea started to percolate. Why not combine this concert for the ISC, with providing a platform for citizens to contribute. Then the government announced that it would match any donation made by an individual, until Dec 31, 2015, and I knew I just had to do it.
So the Instrumental Society, Mennonite Central Committee, an outside consultant and I met and worked out the details and here we are!
MCC will have a table in the lobby to provide more information and take donations - for which a charitable tax receipt will be provided. You can also donate on line. click here
There will be a silent auction as well. Chamber music tickets and CPO musicians’ CD’s will be auctioned.
Why Mennonite Central Committee?
I grew up in a Mennonite community in Winnipeg and have great respect for the consistent service which MCC provides. This is my way of giving back.
Is there anything else that you’d like to tell us about?
I’m working on live streaming the concert, so you can listen from anywhere across the country and contribute as well.
Its looking like the pre-concert performance from Mount Royal University Conservatory will include a work by a Syrian composer!
